We anticipate an exciting term ahead, full of stimulating topics such as ‘The Tudors’, ‘Living Things and Habitats’, ‘Pop – up Books’ and ‘Hinduism’. The Year 4 teachers are keen to introduce the new exciting topics and are excited about getting to know all the children and finding out their individual personalities.

Curriculum Morning

We would like to invite you to the Year 4 Curriculum Morning where you will have the opportunity of meeting the teachers and finding out what we have planned this year. This will be from 9.15 on Wednesday 17th September. We look forward to meeting as many of you as can make it.

If you are unable to make this date and have any questions about the curriculum and the upcoming year please take the opportunity to speak to your class teacher at the end of the school day for the school day. All the topics covered in the autumn term can also be found on the school website.

Year 4 Curriculum Autumn Term

Enrichment Activities

There will be many exciting events and trips planned for this year, including, a trip to Hampton Court, a visit by ‘Mexicolore’ (who tell the children all about the Aztecs) in the spring and of course our first Nelson School Year 4 residential trip; we will be going to PGL Windmill Hill, Hailsham in East Sussex from the 8th to the 10th May. There will be information about this trip sent out soon, however, you may like a ‘sneak-peek’ by following this link: .

There will also be two dressing up events planned this year which are specific to Year 4. The first one will be Tudor Day, after half term, and the second is Science Fiction Day, which is in spring.

School Diary/Reading Record

As per last year, the school will provide each child with a diary. This contains lots of useful information about the school and exciting facts. The children will be given the opportunity at the end of every day to write something about their day at school. They will then bring their diaries home for you to look at. Please can you ensure that they are bringing them to school with them every day.

As well as their reflections, the children will be completing any reading they do at home (on a daily basis), into these diaries. If they have read for 15-20 minutes a day for a whole week children will receive a reward.

Home Learning

We will be continuing with the same set up for home learning as per the end of last year. Your child will be given, at the start of each half term a sheet with a selection of home learning projects for them to do and then to bring to school when finished. These will continue to be optional. The list of tasks can also be found on the website.

CATS Tests

Year 4 is the year where the children complete a set of computerised tests which assesses how well your children can think about tasks and solve problems, using a range of different questions. These are not tests that need revision and are designed solely to provide the teachers with extra information as to how best the children in the class learn.

There are helpful revision guides based on in-class learning found at, to help with subject knowledge or processes to support you and your children at home.

Swimming will start the week beginning 17th September. These are the dates and times for each class:

  • 4D, Miss Day – Monday 1:45-2:15pm
  • 4C, Mr Cuell – Tuesday 9:30-10:00am
