Dear Parents and Carers,Â
We hope that you had a lovely Spring break. Welcome to the Summer Term where we look forward to a busy and exciting term with the children.Â
Reading
We will continue to focus on word reading to develop fluency and comprehension skills. In Year 3, we will start by reading, Cool by Michael Morpurgo followed by Planet Omar: Accidental Trouble Magnet by Zanib Mian.
Curriculum Highlights
Our big question this half term is, ‘How did the Roman Empire grow and what was their impact on Britain?’ We will also look at this during some of our English units where we will write a diary as a Roman soldier and will learn about how Rome was founded by delving into the legend of Romulus and Remus. Children will also participate in Roman Day and are invited to dress as a Roman if they wish to. More details will follow nearer the time.
In science, we will be carrying out investigations to develop our understanding of plants and what they need to grow. We will consider how water is transported around a plant, and we will understand the life cycle of a plant by looking at seed dispersal, pollination and fertilisation. Â Year 3 will also be looking at what plants provide for us in relation to nutrition and how they contribute to our overall health and well-being. After half term, we will be learning about how to keep our bodies healthy. We will also learn about the different types of skeletons in our body and how muscles work.Â
In Summer 2, we will consider, ‘How are mountains and volcanoes formed and what is it like to live near Mount Vesuvius?’ The children will investigate how volcanoes affect people’s lives and discover the history of eruptions.
During this term, we will also begin to explore the changes ahead for the children with their move to Year 4. We will talk about how change can make you feel and provide opportunities for the children to share any concerns and excitement about the changes ahead.Â
You can find out more information about the summer term learning by looking at the overviews and programmes of study on the website.
Updates and reminders
Morning routine – School gates open at 8.35am. Children can come straight into the classroom. Registers will be taken at 8.40am.
Snacks – Children may choose to bring their own fruit/vegetable snack which can be eaten during morning break. Please remember we are a healthy and nut free school.Â
Medication - Please ensure that your child’s teacher has any relevant medication and that this medication is up-to-date.Â
P.E - Our P.E. days will continue to be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children should come to school wearing their P.E. kits and trainers on these days and will remain in these all day. A reminder that if children are wearing earrings these should only be studs and not hoops. Stud earrings will be covered with tape during PE lessons for safety. Long hair must be tied up at all times including during PE.Â
Home Learning
We ask that children spend around 15 minutes reading each day. Spelling fluency and handwriting homework will be sent home on a Wednesday, and we ask for it to be returned on a Monday. We will continue to have access to Times Tables Rockstars and ask that children try to complete 5 minutes of TTRS every day. We will also be introducing an online spelling game called Morphs, children can complete 5 minutes every day alongside TTRS. The login details can be found in your child’s Reading Record.  Over the half term we will also send home creative project-based home learning.Â
